The Great Urban Race | San Francisco 8/14/2010

Since 1947 Variety Children's Charity of Northern California has provided local special-needs children and families with crucial relief services, including a needed infusion of appreciation money, material and equipment so that they live happier, healthier and productive lives. With the generous support of our membership, corporate sponsors and volunteers, we are able to make a lasting difference in the lives of handicapped, critically ill and disadvantaged children.

" The Bar Method integrates the fat-burning format of interval training with muscle-shaping isometrics to quickly and safely reshape the entire body. Its non-impact, one-hour workout targets all major muscle groups and improves posture. The result is a recognizable “Bar Method body” featuring sculpted arms, flat abs, a lifted seat, and elongated thighs."

Congratulations to the nearly 700 racers that participated in this year’s Great Urban Race San Francisco! A cloudy start turned into a beautiful day full of outstanding costumes and a great time!

Participants navigated the streets of San Fran and completed 12 challenges. Along the way, racers enjoyed cupcakes at American Cupcake, earned their boating licenses at Old Ship Saloon, learned the art of poi with Temple of Poi, used a steady hand playing Jenga, put their noggins to work solving mental puzzles, got a work out at the Bar Method, became cartoon artists at the Cartoon Art Museum, and completed many more crazy challenges!

A special thanks to everyone who donated school supplies to Variety Children’s Charity! They truly appreciated all of your donations!

Gals Still Cookin’ came bolting through the finish line in an astounding time of 2:07:30. Great race guys! The Tweedles made it an extremely close race and crossed the finish just 24 seconds after with a time of 2:07:54. Melnyk Magic rounded out our Top Three at a time of 2:16! Awesome job everyone!

It was also a close race for our family teams, but Got Winners? came out on top, earning the title of Top Family Team by crossing the finish line with a time of 3:45. Great job!

We certainly had some awesome and creative costumes out at the race! After a two-time clap off, The Astronaut and the Full Moon stole the costume contest, but with tough competition from the The Miracle of Life! Thanks so much to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day!

A huge round of applause to our St. Jude Top Fundraiser team, Guts: Do You Have It? for raising $670! Great job to Skywalker, our St. Jude Challenge winners, who were the first to fly through the finish line in their Heroes capes. Many thanks to all of our San Francisco St. Jude Heroes for raising a total of $2,300 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

Many thanks to our amazing volunteers from St. Jude, Sports Basement, all of our clue locations, and all of our participants. The GUR crew had an amazing time in San Francisco and we look forward to returning next year!!

What was your overall race strategy? Just keep running!

Did anything go wrong during the race? Yes…we left a phone at one clue and had to go back!

What was your favorite clue? Why? Poi! It was super cool, we like playing with fire!

What was the most memorable part of the day? Beating the Tweedles!

Any secrets to your success that you’re willing to share? Nope
