Great Urban Race is proud to be partnering with Schoolhouse Supplies for the second time in 2010. Schoolhouse Supplies is an award-winning nonprofit that supports public education in Portland by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies. Their mission, “to serve classrooms in need by operating a volunteer-run Free Store for Teachers, which is stocked with supplies donated by the community,” is based on the belief that every child deserves school supplies and has the right to a quality education. Congratulations to the nearly 630 racers that participated in the third Great Urban Race Portland! The weather made the race even better and it was an overall exciting and eventful day in Portland!

Participants navigated the streets and completed all sorts of activities. Along the way, participants made friends with crawfish at Jake’s Famous Crawfish, earned their driver licenses by scooting on butt scooters at the Oregon Historical Society, got back to their childhood roots by jumping rope and hula hooping at Pettygrove Park, played Venetian Solitaire at AM Living, taste tested sodas and ate delicious pizza at Hot Lips, designed their team logos at the Art Institute of Portland, snapped a photo with the “real” Paul Stanley of Kiss at Apple Music Row and many more fun challenges!

A special thanks to everyone who school supplies to SchoolHouse Supplies. They truly appreciated our donations and had barrels overflowing with donations!

Andy Almonte and Tyler Runner of The Nads came dashing through the finish line in an astounding time of 1:04! Great race guys! Tool Works crossed the finish at 1:10, followed by Transcontinental Twins at 1:12 to round out our Top Three.

Scott Svetal and Mark English of Next Stop…Phil were our Top Family Team, Great job! After a two-time clap off at the costume contest, Wendy Schumer and Maxine Reierson of the Blues Sistas were triumphant! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day!

A huge round of applause to our St. Jude Top Fundraisers, Team Gaga, for raising $1,785! Congratulation to our St. Jude Challenge winner, Brad Kilby of the Kind Ozoners, who was the first to fly through the finish line in his Heroes cape. Many thanks to all of our Portland St. Jude Heroes for raising a total of $6,740!

Many thanks to our amazing volunteers from St. Jude, On Deck Sports Bar, all of our clue locations, and all of our participants. The GUR crew had a fantastic time in Portland and we look forward to returning in 2011!

CHAMPION INTERVIEW

Have you ever participated in a GUR before? Nope. First time, but we will be back for sure. Go Nads!

How did you prepare for the race? We walked around town a lot to get the lay of the land. Neither of us knows PDX too well.

What was your overall race strategy? Run out to the furthest task and take whatever wonky route back.

Did anything go wrong during the race? Had to go back and eat the pizza again.

What was your favorite clue? Tic-Tac-Toe. Jumping into people’s cars and grabbing someone’s dog sometimes freaks people out.

What was the most memorable part of the day? Jumping into someone’s car and saying, “Hey, it’s cool, we’re in a race.”

Any secrets to your success… that you’d be willing to share? Learn to talk on the phone while sprinting.
