Congratulations to the nearly 700 participants that competed in the fourth Great Urban Race Austin! The weather was beautiful, there were show-stopping costumes, and we had a great time!

 

Participants navigated the streets of Downtown Austin and along the way completed a cheerleading lesson with the UT cheerleaders at Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, learned how to lasso at Shady Grove Restaurant, shook a pick out of a guitar at MusicMakers, completed a zumba lesson at Gold’s Gym, posed with Lizardman, learned how to play the recorder at Mellow Mushroom, posed with turtles, ate yummy doughnuts at Gourdough’s, and many more fun challenges!

 

A special thanks to everyone who donated canned food items to the Mary Lee Foundation. They truly appreciated our donations as they collected over 1,200 cans to stock their food pantry! Way to go!

 

There was a two-way tie for first place as Kipley and David of Team Vignette-KD and Marcy and John of Team Vignette-MJ dashed through the finish line in an outstanding time of 1:28! Shortly after, Team Dynamic Health Racing crossed at 1:56, securing their spot in third place! Great race!

 

Aaron, Emily and Micah of Team More or Less Average crossed at 2:51, coming in 24th Place and winning Austin’s Top Family Team. Congratulations and happy 13th birthday to Micah!

 

The costume contest was a riot! Teams threw beads, mushrooms, and one team offered to throw their babies (kidding, of course) into the audience! In the final round, The Simpsons won with a roaring applaud!

 

A BIG round of applause to our St. Jude Top Fundraisers, Team Running of the Brides, who raised $1,682 for St. Jude! Congrats to our St. Jude Challenge winners, Team Updog! Austin Heroes raised a total of $7,055 for St. Jude!

 

Congratulations and best wishes to Christian and Joanna of Team GoogleUs, who got engaged during our Awards Ceremony! We are so glad we were part of your special day!

CHAMPION INTERVIEW

(with Team Vignette-KD):

 

Have you ever participated in the Great Urban Race before?  No... not us... never!  Er... okay... maybe once or twice!

 

How did you prepare for the race?  We ate donuts, practiced playing the recorder, and practiced doing Longhorn cheers!  Much to our surprise, those were exactly the right things to be practicing!

 

What was your overall race strategy?  We figured the Mary Lee Foundation checkpoint would be the furthest away, so we headed there first.  Then we worked our way through the rest of the points back North.

 

Did anything go wrong during the race?  Someone *cough* Kip! *cough* was convinced he knew where the Turtle Pond at UT was since he went to college there... and yet, he ran right past it!

 

What was your favorite clue?  The cheerleaders!  Three out of four Team Vignette racers heartily agree!

 

What was the most memorable part of the day?  Playing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" on the recorder... because we had to memorable-ize how to play it!

 

Any secrets to your success... that you'd be willing to share? Having a super-star, calm, genius "phone contact" to guide you as you're running around the city is INVALUABLE!  Thank you to Chris and Sheila for leading us in the right direction!

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAID...

 

This was my first GUR race and I had a wonderful time! We never used public transportation and it was just the right amount of running! Now I know how to be better prepared for next year too! Thanks for the hard work!

 

 

This was my very first race of this sort. I felt as if my teammate and I bonded and became closer! Trekking all around town trying to solve clues was the best way to spend a Saturday ever!

 

 

This is a great experience and I hope to do more in the future! I will tell all of my family and friends about it! Thanks for coming to Austin!

 

 

It was so much fun!! I loved it and everyone we have told about it wants to do it next year! Great concept and awesome course!
