The Great Urban Race | San Diego 10/23/2010

Toussaint Academy of the Arts and Sciences (TAAS) provides stable housing for homeless youth who are unable to reunify with their families and who are not currently in the foster care system. We help teens ages 14 to 18 with a continuum of supportive services including counseling, case management, educational support, life skills, employment, and more. We also have an aftercare program that provides college scholarships and other supportive services to our alumni up through age 24. Our goal is to help homeless youth finish high school, go on to college, and get the skills they need to be successful. We serve 100 youth each year through residential and aftercare services.

Congratulations to the nearly 700 racers that participated in this year’s Great Urban Race San Diego! A rainy start turned into a beautiful day full of outstanding costumes and a great time!

Participants navigated the streets of San Diego, breaking a sweat at Down Town Fitness, tied a nautical knot at the USS Midway, took a bite out of the Spicy Pickle, used their sense of smell to identify tea flavors at Coffee and Art, crafted a handmade puppet at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater and completed many more crazy challenges!

A special thanks to everyone who donated school supplies to Toussaint Academy of the Arts and Sciences! They truly appreciated all of your donations!

San Diego Hash House Harriers came bolting through the finish line in an astounding time of 1:57. Great race guys! Operation: More Cow Bell made it an extremely close race and crossed the finish just 1 minute later with a time of 1:58. The Most Interesting Men in the World rounded out our Top Three at a time of 2:05! Awesome job everyone!

Easy, Peezy, Lemon Squeezy came out on top, earning the title of Top Family Team by crossing the finish line with a time of 2:33. Great job!

We certainly had some awesome and creative costumes out at the race! After a two-time clap off, Where’s Waldo? stole the costume contest! Thanks so much to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day!

A huge round of applause to our St. Jude Top Fundraiser team, Creech, Inc. for raising $855! Great Job to Team B our St. Jude Challenge winners, who were the first to fly through the finish line in their Heroes capes. Many thanks to all of our San Diego St. Jude Heroes for raising a total of $4,321 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

Many thanks to our amazing volunteers from St. Jude and Alpha Phi Omega, Toussaint Academy of the Arts and Sciences, all of our clue locations, and all of our participants. The GUR crew had an amazing time in San Diego and we look forward to returning next year!!

Have you ever participated in a GUR before?

Yes. San Diego 2009

How did you prepare for the race?

We run with the Hash House Harriers “A drinking club with a running problem.”

What was your overall race strategy?

Run fast, go to the farthest location first, drink one beer before the race.

Did anything go wrong during the race?

One hot dog vendor was kinda rude due to all the questions he had gotten from GUR contestants.

What was your favorite clue? Why?

Love the Tic-Tac-Toe! 3 Clues in 1!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

All the photos with non-participants who aren’t involved in GUR.

Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share?

Don’t be too serious and pre-race cocktails! And wear a darn costume!
