Great job to the 993 participants who competed in the inaugural Great Urban Race Houston! Lucky’s Pub was packed with awesome costumes and excited racers roaring to hit the streets of Houston!  Thanks to yelp.com for giving racers chapstick and a shout-out to Chipotle for providing racers with free burritos, sweet swag and prize packs for our winners!

Racers made their way to Discovery Green to test their Jenga skills, learned how to make origami, completed the Chipotle obstacle course at Cherryhurst Park, watched a video at the Aurora Picture Show, ate Serrano peppers at Habanero’s, stopped at James Coney Island for some delicious cookies, showed off their pong-toss skills at Maple Leaf Pub and much more!

Chris Canonico and Daniel Bosse of Balls Out finished in a remarkable time of 1:55! Amazing job! The Asian Invasion Comeback crossed the finish line shortly after with a time of 1:57, followed shortly after by Team Damn, I Knew That! with a time of 2:06.

Congratulations to Team GUR-oovy who won the St. Jude Challenge. And a HUGE round of applause to Ricky Mahendra and Matt Cote of Team Unemployed for raising nearly $4,000 for St. Jude! Thank you to all the St. Jude Heroes from Houston who raised a grand total of... $13,788!

A two-time clap-off was needed to determine the winner of the costume contest.  In the end, the audience’s cheers and chants crowned the sombrero-wearing, dancing and singing Los Dos Pistolas as our winners!

Thanks to all of our St. Jude volunteers, Lucky’s Pub, Chipotle, Emerging Leaders of Houston, our clue venues, and our participants. The GUR Crew had an incredible time in Houston and we look forward to returning next year!

 

 

CHAMPION INTERVIEW:

Have you ever participated in GUR before? Does driving in the morning rush hour count? If not, nope, first one for both of us

 

How did you prepare for the race? Had the 2nd place team to do all of our research for us. Thanks Dana and Marcie!

 

What was your overall race strategy? Try to figure out which clue was the farthest away, then catch the bus there and work our way back.

 

Did anything go wrong during the race? Our ace “phone-a-friend” gave us the wrong address to James Coney Island, had to retrace 4 blocks to the correct address. Note: we have fired the old phone-a-friend and we are currently taking applications for a replacement for the National Race!

 

What was your favorite clue? The pepper eating challenge. It made us run faster after downing the peppers!

 

What was the most memorable part of the day? Actually taking a Metro Bus in Houston!

Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? Draft the 2nd place team all day, then pass them on the last sprint to the finish line.
