Placed finished in the 2008 Dallas race:
68th overall, 4th in Family Division

Why did you have fun participating in GUR?
There were so many aspects of the race that were amazingly fun. We loved the competitive, yet friendly atmosphere. It was fun talking to total strangers – including other racing teams we met and traveled with at times as well as random people on the street. I have lived in the Dallas area my whole life, and it was fun to see the city in a completely new way. Another thing we really liked was seeing all the costumes and reading the funny shirts.

How do you know each other?
Christopher is my son; Carrie is my niece.

What’s your favorite part about participating in The Great Urban Race?
I liked the challenge of solving the puzzles and trying to finish the race. It was very exciting walking around downtown Dallas while on the phone with our computer/anagram experts, trying to understand the train and bus schedules, making sure we were getting the right pictures, etc. I loved the excitement when we discovered the answer to a clue or found something we had been looking for a long time. My absolute favorite moment in the race was when we had been looking for the Farmer’s Market with two other teams, and we finally arrived. We were all looking for the banana vendor together when Christopher whispered to us that we could probably find a Mexican flag there. We snuck off and got that picture first. The intrigue of the moment made me feel like I was a part of a true reality show!

Why would you recommend The Great Urban Race?
We have, in fact, recommended GUR to many other people. Our goal is to get the entire family to participate next year. It is a fabulous way to spend a Saturday. It was fun seeing how each member of the team had his/her own skills to contribute – even the kids. We made some fantastic memories.

Thoughts about The Great Urban Race?
We never expected to win the race this year – our goal was to finish. We finished the race in time but had to skip one clue to do it. We are already planning for next year, thinking about possible team names and strategies. Watch out Dallas competitors, because next year we will not only finish the race – we’re planning to win the Family Division – and possibly the whole kit and caboodle!!

We’ll be returning to the Big D again in 2009! Teams will find checkpoints, complete challenges and navigate the streets of areas like Downtown, Uptown and West Village.
