Congratulations to all of the participants who made Great Urban Race Tampa such a huge success! Almost 900 racers came to Splitsville seeking adventure and wearing lots of creative costumes.
Participants navigated the streets of Tampa and completed a variety of unique activities, from a Miller 64 sponsored clue to tasting delicious menu items at Hott Mess Food Truck, completing a Beyoncé dance challenge, and this year’s Feature Clue: the choice of walking on glass or bending a piece of rebar with only his or her neck! Thank you to our host, Tampa YMCA for allowing us to use their space, and the staff of Fire Your Desire for facilitating the challenge.
A special thanks to everyone who donated needed supplies to the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa. Your donations made a huge difference to families in need and they truly appreciate your efforts!
At first place Classy Beaches came dashing through the finish line with an astounding time of 1:45! Dumb and Dumber quickly came in second, crossing the finish line at 1:46! Nerd Herd locked in third place with a time of 1:50 to round out our Top Three. These teams also receive a free entry to the Las Vegas Championship where they will compete for the $10,000 prize!
The costume contest was full of great get-ups, and the audience enjoyed a show from all of our Best Costume Nominees. After one of the most intense clap-offs in GUR History between some awesome costumes, Team TaTa narrowly defeated the Golden Girls and the Ambiguously Gay Duo! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day.
Thank you to our volunteers, Ronald McDonald House of Tampa, Splitsville Lanes' staff, our clue locations and all of our phenomenal participants. The GUR crew had an amazing time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEW
With Classy Beaches
Have you ever participated in a GUR before? | No! |
How did you prepare for the race? | We had no preparation, we just had fun! Actually, we even had no battery left for our camera and a low battery phone! |
What was your overall race strategy? | To go in a circle. We took time out at the begining to map out our route and used my teammate as a navigator. |
Did anything go wrong during the race? | Nothing went wrong! The penny war was hard though. We also did all 12 instead of 11 |
What was your favorite clue? Why? | Our favorite clue was math, and our favorite challenge was dance |
What was the most memorable part of the day? | Winning! We didn't expect it and the feature clue was scary. |
Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? | The people make the event. The team was diverse with different skills and balance. |
