Congratulations to the 570 racers that came out to participate in Great Urban Race Scottsdale!
Participants navigated the streets of Scottsdale and completed a wide variety of exciting activities! You hopped on a skateboard at Sidewalk Surfer, guessed the perfumes of today’s biggest stars, and even ate a scorpion at Club Tattoo! Talk about a conversation starter!
A special thank you to everyone who donated the much needed items to the Ronald McDonald House Phoenix. Your donations made a huge difference and they truly appreciate your efforts!
The first place team was Ohhh Bikers who crossed the finish line at 2:55:48! Forever young was a close second at 2:59:02, followed by The Cat Ladies with a time of 3:00:00 sharp to round out our top three.
After an intense clap-off between some outstanding costumes, the Costume Contest was won by Assault and Battery, who stole the show with their homemade costumes. A special thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day!
In addition, a huge thank you to our St. Jude Top Fundraisers, Sole Sisters! Our Scottsdale St. Jude Heroes raised an amazing total of nearly $1,300.
Thank you to all of our St. Jude volunteers, our sponsor Miller 64, Ronald McDonald House Phoenix, our clue locations and all of our phenomenal participants. The GUR crew had an amazing time in Scottsdale thanks to you all!
CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEW
With Ohhh Bikers
Have you ever participated in a GUR before? | Yes! This is our second year being on a team together! Last year was Ryan's first go at GUR and for him being in a fairly new city, Team R.O.N. (Revenge of the Nerds) made a decent showing at 13th place! Jennifer has participated in GUR 4 times always qualifying for the championship and never getting to go-hopefully this year is the year! |
How did you prepare for the race? | We prepared for the race by saying NO to a late night with our friends the night before-a sacrifice for sure, but well worth it! |
What was your overall race strategy? | Last year we got excited when the race started and ended up on a light rail in the wrong direction. This year we made sure to take time to solve as many clues as we could before taking off! |
Did anything go wrong during the race? | With all of our planning, we still managed to miss a couple of and unfortunately didn't realize it until we ran a half mile in the wrong direction. |
What was your favorite clue? Why? | Ryan liked Tic-Tac-Toe! It gave us a way to be creative and somewhat distracted we tried to get to the next clue! Jennifer liked solving the movie clue at Hall of Frames!! She was proud to be a child of the 80s in order to have seen Raising Arizona!! |
What was the most memorable part of the day? | After over hearing another team saying that the Top 25 teams had already finished and with 2 hours and 52 minutes on the clock, we decided, in what we thought was a last ditched effort, to get off the bus and run as fast as our legs would carry us the last half mile. We thought we were running to get our personal best time and were shocked to find we were in first! |
Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? | Run, jog, or walk as much as you can! Our legs were sore for days, but it was a good burn! ;) Public transportation is great, but the timing is unreliable and it can get slowed down and crowded by too many team waiting to get on! |
