Congratulations to all participants who made our first Great Urban Race Pittsburgh a huge success! Nearly 200 racers came out to Bar Louie seeking adventure and wearing crazy costumes. Participants navigated through the streets of Pittsburgh and completed a variety of unique activities, from a pasta challenge at Spaghetti Warehouse, sampling refreshing sorbet from Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor, to performing hula-hoop tricks with Evolve, and learning crochet at Society for Contemporary Craft.

A special thanks to everyone who donated items to the Pittsburgh chapter of American Red Cross! Your donations made a huge impact and they truly appreciate your efforts!

In first place, TnT-Boom! came bolting through the finish line with an astounding time of 2:08! Schmersal came in second, crossing the finish line at 2:11:00! In third place Wildrays finished at 2:11:02. These teams also receive a free entry to the New Orleans Championship where they will compete for the $10,000 prize! Additional congratulations to our Top Family Team, Runner? No I’m a Walker.

A big thank you to our St. Jude Fundraising Winner Rachel Ramano and our St. Jude Challenge winner Cooper’s Cavalry 2. As the winner, they are also eligible to compete in the New Orleans Championship on November 12, 2011!

The costume contest was full of great costumes and the audience enjoyed a show from all of our best costume nominees. The Real Housewives of Allegheny County took home the prize! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day.

Thank you to our St. Jude volunteers, Bar Louie, American Red Cross, our clue locations and all of our phenomenal participants. The GUR Crew had an amazing time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!

CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEW
With Team TnT - Boom!
Members: Tori Furphy & Tim Furphy

Have you ever participated in a GUR before?

Nope- first one!

How did you prepare for the race? We really wanted to place in the top 25, so we did our homework. We did all the practice clues online, freshened up on the bus system, and bought a map. Oh yeah, we also started running to get in shape (well Tori did at least…).
What was your overall race strategy? 1. Figure out the clues 2. Plan the route 3. Run fast!
Did anything go wrong during the race? We missed the bus back to the finish line, so we had to run the last mile. We figured that killed us. We were shocked to find out we still came in first.
What was your favorite clue? Why? The one at the Italian restaurant, Spaghetti Warehouse. We were so sure that we were going to have to eat a huge bowl of pasta. We were so relieved when that wasn't the case. Running on a full stomach is tough.
What was the most memorable part of the day? The moment we discovered we came in first place!
Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? Plan the route out when you get the clues at the beginning- it will end up saving you so much time.
