Congratulations to all participants who made our first Great Urban Race Orange County a huge success! Nearly 200 teams came out to OC Sports Grill seeking adventure and wearing crazy costumes. Participants navigated through the streets of Orange County and completed a variety of unique activities, from roller skating at Holiday Skate Center, indulging in a GUR milkshake from Original Mike’s, learning martial arts at Frazier Martial Arts, pairing beers at Chapter One and jumping high in front of the iconic Angels hats.
A special thanks to everyone who donated items to the YWCA Central Orange County. Your donations made a huge impact and will help the YWCA continue their efforts empowering women. They truly appreciate your efforts!
In first place, GUR-Animals came bolting through the finish line with an astounding time of 3:21! SuperBeeros came in second, crossing the finish line at 3:31! In third place Brujans finished at 3:43. These teams also receive a free entry to the New Orleans Championship where they will compete for the $10,000 prize! Additional congratulations to our Top Family Team, That’s How We Roll!
A big thank you to our St. Jude Fundraising Winner Wine Goddesses and our St. Jude Challenge winner The Azul 24. As the winner, they are also eligible to compete in the New Orleans Championship on November 12, 2011!
The costume contest was full of great costumes and the audience enjoyed a show from all of our best costume nominees. Los Toritos took home the prize after a tough clap off with SuperBeeros! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day.
Thank you to our St. Jude volunteers, OC Sports Grill, YWCA, our clue locations and all of our phenomenal participants. The GUR Crew had an amazing time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEW
With Team GUR-Animals
Have you ever participated in a GUR before? | Yes – LA in 2009 and 2010, and the National Championship in Las Vegas in 2010.. |
How did you prepare for the race? | Printed out about 20 bus maps from the internet. Got confused because we don't know how to read them. Went out for drinks instead. |
What was your overall race strategy? | Use the useless bus schedule printouts as scrap paper to make a real plan. And start running. |
Did anything go wrong during the race? | We went to the old Flight Deck location, and found out it moved. Oops. Someone tell Google! |
What was your favorite clue? Why? | The Beer Smell Test at Chapter One. It smelled better than the bus. |
What was the most memorable part of the day? | DuhÂ…WINNING!! |
Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? | An awesome friend on the phone who doesn't question the randomness you are asking her to look up. Thanks, Julia! |
