Thank you to our St. Jude volunteers, Stronghold Atlanta, Sidebar staff, our clue locations and all of our phenomenal participants. The GUR crew had an amazing time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
Champion Interview
with the Salty Penguins
Have you ever participated in GUR before? | This is our 4th year of racing in Atlanta, and things just seemed to click for us this year! We have also been to the last three National Championships and look forward to New Orleans this year (and now we don't have to pay the entry fee!) |
How did you prepare for the race? | Reilly used his track practice from the last two months to be in great shape for running. Brion assembled the requisite items: map, cell phone, head-set, pencil and paper, and tried to train to keep up with Reilly! We both spent some time speculating where we might go on the race; we were wrong for the most part. |
What was your overall race strategy? | Run as much as we could and do so very fast! Determine the two or three areas of the city where the clues were clumped and hit the area farthest away first. |
Did anything go wrong during the race? | We wasted a lot for time looking for a paper job application. Brion's shoe came untied during the final sprint to the finish. |
What was your favorite clue? Why? | The Chipotle Challenge of making a paper airplane that would land in a small circle. Required good airplane construction skills and expert flight execution due to variable and gusting wind conditions. |
What was the most memorable part of the day? | The final stretch run from the Fox to the finish, knowing we might have chance to well in the standings. |
Any secrets to your success that you'd be willing to share? | Two secrets: 1) Deirdre, our Googler extraordinaire!, but we won't share her! 2) Luck - the race takes fast running, good mapping and route plotting skills and, to win, a little amount of good luck! |
