The Great Urban Race is a one-of-a-kind urban adventure. Teams of two run, walk, and use public transit while navigating city streets and completing fun clues and challenges.

Object:

   •  To have fun (first and foremost).

   •  To have a memorable adventure.

   •  To be the first team to complete all the clues.

Clues:

At the beginning of the race you’ll be given an envelope that contains twelve clues ranging in difficulty.

Your clue sheet will contain a mixture of clues - some mandatory and some regular (option to skip).

During the race you will have the option to skip one regular clue.  Choose wisely, as this can play a big role in your finish time.

Each race will contain at least one Detour, which is a choice between two checkpoints. Choose the one you think will be easier or faster (or more fun).

For every clue that's incorrect or missing a 30 minute penalty will be added to your time.

*(New rule on 4/9/08)  If a mandatory clue is skipped, the team will be disqualified from the race.

You will not have the option of returning to properly complete the clue.

Types:

Physical Challenge:   Feed your teammate some tasty food, do something daring, or compete in a game.

Scavenger:  Return to the finish line with a random item (not always a cinch to find).

Puzzles:  Think Sodoku, word searches, crosswords and the like.

Brain Teasers: Riddles or similar to really tease your brain.

Interactive Challenge: Interaction, on some level, with strangers.

Help!:

Phone-a-friend:  Some clues will require finding obscure facts to complete.  Get a good Googler (or more than one) on board because their help will probably be needed.

High-tech: Yes, laptops, GPS', cell phones, fax machines, Blackberry's, etc. are all welcome.

Transportation:

  • You’re only allowed to travel by foot or public transit (buses, trains, ferries, trolleys, etc.).
  • You may not use taxis, private cars, motorcycles, in-line skates, pedi-cabs, bikes, or any other form of private transportation.

Family Division:

The family division is reserved for families with one racer under the age of 18.  We will give a separate award for the top family team at each race.

Keep in mind, The Great Urban Race is difficult to complete and designed for adults, so if there are young participants, they may need assistance from an older team member.

Teams in the Family Division are allowed to compete as 2, 3, or 4 people.

Should a team in the Family Division finish among the top 25 at the local race, they will qualify for the National Championship, but only two may compete.

So there. Start strategizing!
