Race Day Recap

Congratulations to all Masterminds in Tampa who conquered the 2014 Great Urban Race! All participants started their adventure at MacDinton’s and then went on to discover the hidden clues in their city. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem-solving, and physical tenacity!

Throughout the day our participants went to Buddy Brew Coffee where they had to use a homemade slingshot to fling coffee beans into a bucket that was located on their partner’s head. Another favorite was Inkwood Books where Masterminds had to balance books on their heads while navigating through the store blindfolded. Also, who could forget Raydiance Spa where participants got waxed?

We’d like to give big high-fives to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2014 National Championship in Vancouver on August 9 where they’ll have the chance to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. In first place, we had Professor Plum’s Pink Posses finishing in 1:26:40! Beer Goggles finished in second with a time of 1:26:53 and The Silver Bullets grabbed the third place spot at 2:17.

Thanks to all of the teams who dressed up and brought some added spirit to the day. A special shout out goes to the Himcesses for winning the costume contest! Team Ninja Turdles also get a shout out for being perfectly average and winning the middleman award. We would also like to thank our St. Jude volunteers, BACARDI, all of our clue locations, and of course all of our amazing Masterminds! The GUR Crew had such an enjoyable time and we hope to see you again later this year in Vancouver.

Champion Interview

With Professor Plum’s Pink Posse

How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?

We have participated in 4-5 before but this was our first 1st place!

When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?

Our first step is to take a picture. We have a group of awesome friends that help us out.

Did you use public transportation during the race?

Nope but in ATL we have used public transportation.

Did you utilize ground support? (phone-a-friend) If yes, how did you choose your team?

Yes, we use people who have run the race before.

Did anything set you back today?

We couldn’t find a “For Sale” sign to complete the tic-tac-toe challenge!

What was your favorite challenge?

We really enjoyed the Coast Guard challenge and the coffee bean slingshot challenge was pretty funny.

What’s your team motto/theme song?

This race we had a combination of two regular teams so we didn’t have one.

What role does each of you play on the team?

Jerry helps coordinate and communicates with the ground support. Naomi is the voice of calm and tackles all of the science questions.

Any words of wisdom for future racers?

You have to be in shape to win! Don’t wait around; once you get your clue sheets, just go!
