RACEDAY RECAP

We would like to give a round of applause to all who joined us for our 3rd Great Urban Race Tampa! The day started with a pre race sprinkle followed by a burst of Florida sunshine at noon, as over 650 participants bolted out of Splitsville Lanes. Racers came ready to challenge their minds, test their agility and give Tampa a great fashion show along the way!

Participants completed a variety of out of the box challenges, from zooming around Tampa thanks to Segway of Central Florida, to nudging meatballs with their noses at Spaghetti Warehouse. Forming conga lines with strangers, learning to belly dance from Hip Expressions instructors at the YMCA and snacking on a Twinkie at Hamburger Mary’s, never once intimidated a GUR participant! Ride Factory taught racers about the essential parts of a motorcycle, while Powerhouse Gym showed them how to jumpstart their heart rates!

The first place team, MonkeeDactyls flew across the finish line at 1:28. Not too far behind was our second place duo, T.B.A, crossing at 1:30. Team DC sprinted across the finish line at 1:32 capturing the final spot in the Top 3! Our first family team, Blue Clues, sped past the clock at 2:29!

A special thanks to our sponsors, Tampa Bay Club Sport, Chipotle and Tampa Bay Times. Our charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay had a great time interacting with participants! Blue Barracudas earned the title of St. Jude Challenge Winner, being the first fundraising team to cross the finish line! Brunton & Abacus was our top St. Jude Fundraising team and, all together, Tampa racers who participated in the St. Jude Hero’s Program raised over $3,000- way to go!

Those nominating themselves for the Costume Contest really brought their A-game! Tampa’s energetic crowd narrowed the selection of over 15 teams down to only two. The Ambiguously Gay Duo took the cake earning themselves the winning title of Costume Contest Champions!

As the sun began to set over Channelside, participants gave one last cheer to racing again in 2012. Thank you to all who participated in Great Urban Race Tampa, we can’t wait to see you next year!

CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEW
With Team Monkeedactyles

Have you ever participated in a GUR before? No. Similar events, but not GUR.
How did you prepare for the race? We looked up previous race clues and made sure to have our “research team” (i.e. Mike McCarthy) ready to go!
What was your overall race strategy? Determine locations. Determine short path and read all the clues thoroughly.
Did anything go wrong during the race? We had to double back on a clue to do it right, but we hadn’t gotten too far before we realized. Read your clues!
What was your favorite clue? Why? Powerhouse Gym! It kept it physical and we both had to take part in it for success!
What was the most memorable part of the day? Running to the race line and realizing we won when our goal was to only make top 25!
Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share? Use a team to map your route. It’s a team event and only two people actually do the running.  Make sure to read your clues… it could be a game changer!
